Written September 2026. Prices are in US dollars and move with season and exchange rate — use them as a planning baseline, not a quote.
Spain is the best value in Western Europe, and it is not close. Run a Spain trip cost against the same itinerary in Italy and you get $7,000 against $9,000 — for hotels that are as good and food that is arguably better.
Here is the whole thing, itemized, for ten days, two travelers, late September.
Flights
No nonstop from Sacramento. You connect through San Francisco, Los Angeles or an East Coast hub into Madrid or Barcelona, arriving the next morning.
Round-trip economy runs $750 to $1,300 per person in the shoulder months, $550 to $850 in winter, and $1,300 to $1,900 in summer. Ask for an open-jaw — in to Madrid, home from Barcelona. It rarely costs more and it saves you a day.
Trains
The AVE is the reason a Spain itinerary works, and the pricing rewards planning.
Renfe releases most seats sixty to ninety days out. Madrid to Seville runs $40 to $75 per person booked early, and $130 or more on the day. The same pattern holds Madrid–Barcelona and Madrid–Málaga.
Budget $250 to $400 for two across four or five legs. Skip the rental car entirely unless you are doing a Rioja or countryside stretch.
Where you sleep
- Mid-range hotel, Madrid or Seville: $130 to $220 a night
- Barcelona: add roughly 25%
- Paradores — the state-run network of converted castles, monasteries and palaces: $150 to $280, and a genuinely distinctive stay for mid-range money
- The properties people save for: $450 to $1,200
Nine nights, mid-range: $1,400 to $2,000. This is where Spain pulls clearly ahead of Italy and France.
Food — and the one thing nobody orders
Spanish restaurant pricing has three tiers for the same item, posted by law: cheapest standing at the bar, more at an inside table, most on the terrace. Standing is not a downgrade, it is how the country eats.
Then there is the menú del día. Most restaurants serve a fixed-price weekday lunch — three courses, bread and a drink, usually wine — for roughly $16 to $24 per person. It is a proper meal, it is what people who work nearby are eating, and almost no American visitor orders it because it is rarely translated on the board outside.
Eat your main meal at lunch on the menú, graze pintxos or tapas in the evening, and two people eat extremely well for $110 to $150 a day. Do it the other way round — light lunch, full dinner at a tourist restaurant — and the same two people spend $220.
Ten days for two: $900 to $1,500.
The things you came to see
- Alhambra, Granada: $22 to $28 per person — and see the warning below
- Sagrada Família: $30 to $45 depending on whether you climb a tower
- Real Alcázar, Seville: $17 to $22
- Prado: $17; Reina Sofía: $14
- Flamenco at a tablao: $40 to $65 per person
- Private half-day guide: $180 to $300 for the group
Two people, a good mix: $400 to $800.
The whole Spain trip cost
| | Lean | Mid-range | Upper ||---|---|---|---|| Flights (2) | $1,500 | $2,000 | $3,200 || Trains | $250 | $350 | $700 || Lodging (9 nights) | $950 | $1,700 | $5,000 || Food | $900 | $1,300 | $2,400 || Sights and guides | $350 | $650 | $1,600 || Tourist tax | $60 | $90 | $200 || Total for two | $4,010 | $6,090 | $13,100 |
Most Spain trips we book from Woodland land between $5,800 and $7,800 for two. That is roughly 20 to 30% below the equivalent Italy trip.
Four things people miss
- The Alhambra sells out. This is not a cost line, it is a cost of failing: miss the window and your options are a $110-per-person tour or not going. Book it the day your dates are set.
- Walk-up train fares. Two to three times the advance price, and entirely avoidable.
- Tourist tax in Catalonia and the Balearics. A few euros per person per night, collected at the hotel, not in the rate you booked.
- Tipping. Spain does not expect 20%. Rounding up, or leaving a euro or two, is normal — Americans routinely over-tip here by several hundred dollars across a trip.
What actually saves money
Booking the trains and the Alhambra early, and eating lunch like a Spaniard. Those three habits are worth more than a thousand dollars across ten days, and none of them makes the trip worse.
