How much does a trip to Ireland cost? Most articles answer with a daily budget and leave it there. That number is close to useless, because the daily figure is not what decides your total. Five things do, and two of them are usually missed until it is too late to change them.
Here is what our clients from Yolo County and the wider Sacramento Valley actually spend, and where the money really goes.
How much does a trip to Ireland cost? The short answer
For two travellers, ten days, excluding international airfare, the ranges we see most often are:
- Comfortable mid-range — good four-star hotels and country inns, rental car, most dinners out: $4,500 to $6,500
- Upper-tier — manor houses, a castle night or two, several guided days: $9,000 to $14,000
- Ultra-luxury — Ashford, Adare, private driver-guide throughout: $20,000 and up
Add roughly $1,000 to $2,200 per person for round-trip airfare from Sacramento or San Francisco, depending on season and how far ahead you book.
The five things that actually move the number
1. The month, more than anything else. This is the single largest variable, and the one most people underestimate. The same country-house room, the same car, the same itinerary can differ by thirty per cent or more between September and July. Shifting a trip from mid-July to mid-September has saved clients more than upgrading every hotel would have cost them.
2. Whether you drive yourself. A rental car for ten days runs roughly $600 to $1,100 depending on season and transmission. A private driver-guide runs $400 to $700 per day. That is the difference between a $5,000 trip and a $10,000 one, and it is a comfort decision more than a money one — some clients simply do not want to drive on the left on single-track roads.
3. How many bases you use. Not obvious, but real. Five hotels in ten days means five first nights, and first nights are priced higher than second nights at most Irish country properties. Three or four bases with two nights each is both a nicer trip and a cheaper one.
4. Where you eat. Ireland's food scene has become genuinely excellent and priced accordingly. A good pub dinner runs €25 to €35 a head; a tasting menu in Kinsale or Dublin runs €90 to €150. Two or three special dinners across ten days is the pattern most of our clients settle on.
5. The properties you cannot substitute. If there is one specific manor house or castle you want, that anchors the budget and everything else flexes around it. That is a perfectly good way to plan — it just needs deciding first, not last.
The two that catch people out
Automatic transmission rental cars. Most Irish rental fleets are manual. Automatics cost meaningfully more — often forty to sixty per cent above the manual rate — and the supply is genuinely limited. They sell out months ahead for summer. This is the most common late-stage phone call we get, and by then the options are pay a premium, take a manual, or hire a driver.
Rental car insurance. Ireland is one of the few countries where many US credit cards specifically exclude collision coverage. Clients arrive expecting their card to cover it and are handed a bill for €25 to €40 a day at the counter. Check your card's actual terms before you travel, not at the desk.
A worked example
A recent ten-day September trip for two, mid-range, driving themselves:
- Four-star hotels and country inns, four bases — $2,900
- Compact automatic rental, ten days, booked in February — $820
- Fuel and tolls — $260
- Meals, two special dinners — $1,450
- Attractions, guided days, ferries — $540
- Land total: $5,970. Airfare from Sacramento added $2,600 for two.
The same itinerary quoted for the third week of July came to $7,850 — a difference of nearly $1,900 for identical hotels.
What this does not include
Travel insurance, which typically runs four to eight per cent of the insurable trip cost. Ireland is a driving holiday in a country with real weather, and it is one of the destinations where we most consistently recommend it.
Getting a real number
Everything above is a range, and ranges are only useful up to a point. What actually produces a number you can plan against is a conversation about how you like to travel — whether you would rather have four excellent nights or eight good ones, whether you want to drive, and how firm your dates are.
